During the project „art, culture & history“ I was allowed to learn about the ancient culture of Colima, more precisely about the pottered Colima dogs. Colima dogs are ceramic statues representing dogs found in ancient shaft tombs in Mesoamerica, primarily in the western Mexican state of Colima. They usually have short, squat, round bodies with perky ears and are covered with red slip, a mixture of water and fine clay used to intensify the natural red coloration of pottery. These figures probably represent the ancestors of the dog breeds that survive today in the Americas: the Xoloitzcuintli (the Mexican hairless dog) and the Chihuahua. Colima dogs had a complex relationship with humans and were often considered equal partners, performing important assignments and functions in daily life. They served as a source of food, guardian of the dead, healer, watchdog, and were also ritually sacrificed.
